WHAT IT WAS is a powerful song for me. I was immersed in and impacted by the tensions in the US while living on my own and studying. I was 17-20 and became acutely aware of enduring social injustices. As the world grappled with ongoing global upheavals, the song evolved, mirroring the urgent need for change. Now, it's time for the world to listen, reflect, and take action.
lyrics
I got people in my ears telling me some shit
Why they wanna do me wrong, how they trying do me dirty
I got people in my ears telling me a story
Every week they try to speak on something differently
And my momma raised me right
Told me not to fight
Gotta pick my battles, and
This ones pretty tight
There are people asking questions
Instead of answers we got gun possessions
Two sides pulling triggers
One’s real and one’s a figure
Because speech has been forgotten
Freedoms been digressing
People fight oppression
Every day someone countin’ blessings
All that’s heard is
What It Was
What It Was
What It Was
Ain’t how it is no more
oh, Someone’s gotta get us back on track
Someone needs to come bring us back to
What It Was
But it was never like that
Wanna talk about the media let’s talk
Unreliable sourcing, unaccountable, people overpaid and ditzy
Missing the good old days the 50s
Anti-feminist separatist facilities
Inequality searching for equity
Oh, we shouldn’t have to say it twice to make anyone understand
When they spouting a bunch of bullshit
No ones gonna hold their hand Through the ups and downs the turn arounds
We don’t see no change and
All that’s heard today is
What It Was
What It Was
What It Was
Ain’t how it is no more
oh, Someone’s gotta get us back on track
Someone needs to come bring us back to
What It Was
Show me why this is the part where they change the headlines to read what they want
Speaking faith, speak in rhymes, speaking up, losing lives and what’s more is
What It Was
What It Was
What It Was
Ain’t what you should stand for
oh cause
What It Was
What It Was
What It Was
Ain’t how it is no more
No one’s gonna come and bring us back
Get us back on track for greater than
What It Was
****Faded in background****
What It Was
What It Was
What It Was
oh, What It Was
No it was never like that.
